Chris Pearson

Chris Pearson teaches the history of art, architecture and design in the Department of Art History at Capilano University. After living and working in the United States—California, Oregon, Arizona and Texas—for many years he returned to Vancouver in 2006 to become a founding faculty member of Quest University in Squamish. He hopes to share his enthusiasm for visual creativity with the SPG kids and to share his educational experience with the SPG Board. His daughter Emma enjoys going to SPG, and Sarah, the new arrival in the family, should show up here around 2017! He has also served as Class Parent for four years and is looking forward to doing more work with QPAC.

Mieke Bolder

I have two wonderful kids, the eldest in Grade 5 and the youngest in Grade 3 at Quilchena. I just love the fact that with a simple set of guidelines, the children learn to take care of themselves, each other (no matter age/grade) and that is a very respectful way to grow up. SPG has been an amazing before & after school care program for our children. It is hard to imagine how we would run our family when mum & dad are working full time. The SPG program creates so much flexibility in our schedules that we can spend a lot of quality time together as a family. And that is a great bonus for the kids since they have already experienced a day at SPG in good care, with lots of stimulating activities. My professional background is in Finance and Control; I graduated and obtained my professional designations in Europe where I started my career in Finance. In 2007 we moved to Canada and it has been a great experience ever since. I am happy to serve on the SPG Board as Treasurer as it provides the link to my children’s educational environment and my being able to provide a volunteering contribution in my area of expertise.

Vice Chair

Barbara Everdene

Barbara Everdene is a community planner with a decade of research and project management experience focused on reducing the vulnerability of women and children in an international context (Middle East, Central and South Asia). She is currently the Project Manager of West Coast Environmental Law’s Environmental Dispute Resolution Fund while continuing selected international contracts. She has a Masters in Community Planning from UBC (SCARP) and is a registered member of the Canadian Institute of Planners. She has two children at SPG and loves the staff and the program.

Staff Liaison

Joanne Denny

My name is Joanne Denny and I am mom to Wilden, who is in Grade 2, and Annabella, 5 years old and in Kindergarten. Originally from the Yukon, my husband Stewart and I moved to Vancouver just over 4 years ago from England. I work as a technician running a DNA sequencing lab at a UBC research institute located at the BC Children and Women’s hospital site. I don’t have a lot of experience being on boards, but what I lack in experience I will make up with dedication and enthusiasm. Like every parent, I want my children to have the best experiences in life that are available to them. I see firsthand what SPG does for the students of Quilchena.  It is a safe and fun environment for our children, and I would like to be a part of that and help support the students and SPG staff in whatever way I can.

Parent Liaison

Nazmiye Gurbuz

Naz has been working as a Career Counsellor for 16 years. Presently, she works for the Jewish Family Service Agency of Vancouver.  In addition, she has consulting experience and owned several businesses over the years in food and construction industries. Naz volunteers for the Amnesty International, Unitarian Church of Vancouver's Refugee Committee, and Push Festival. In her spare time she makes jewellery, writes poetry and travels. Some of the skills I would be bringing include human resource management, social media, bookkeeping, MS Office, and facilitation. I am also creative, ethical and goal oriented person who believes in continuing learning. My daughter is an Intermediate at SPG and we both love the program and the staff.

Olga Bochkaryova

My son Anton is a Grade 1 student at Quilchena and has attended SPG since kindergarten.  He enjoys many programs available at SPG and looks forward to his full and fun days.  The staff are energetic, freely share their many talents and skills with the kids and help them grow. I moved to Canada and had my daughter 16 years ago (she did not attend Quilchena and is now in Grade 11).  With most of my family back in Russia, I have relied on various daycares and afterschool programs through the years. While a lot of caregivers provide a safe and stimulating environment, the best ones also take the time to really know the children, help them develop as people and guide them as they learn about the world and themselves. They invest in how the child does not just in their program, but also in life. Ultimately, I felt that those caregivers helped me teach my children values and shape their character and understood their important role in the "village" that it takes to raise a child.  SPG is clearly in that small but distinguished group and I am pleased to have an opportunity to support them in their work. Professionally, I am a lawyer and have served for a number of years on the executive of the Canadian Bar Association Banking Section, most recently as chair.

I am so pleased to be a member of the SPG family. My daughter started in 2015 French Immersion and my younger son will join in 2017. The feeling of knowing your children are cared for is indescribable so I am so pleased to be part of the SPG Board. I myself was in French Immersion since kindergarten and am now a CPA with an accounting firm downtown. I am excited to be part of such a wonderful place for my children to be, for many years to come!

My husband, Curtis, and I are the proud parents of our son Kai (Grade 2) and our daughter Makena who is in Kindergarten. Our kids enjoy many activities (swimming, biking, rollerblading, hockey, skiing, karate/dance and piano), and we are always interested in trying new activities.  I am Vice President and General Counsel for The Keg Steakhouse + Bar.  In addition to teaching at UBC’s Allard School of Law, I am actively involved with the Angel Donor’s Dinner, benefitting the Pacific Post-Partum Support Society.  When Curtis takes time away from his cancer research, we often head to Maui to visit the namesake places of our kids, who love beaches and ocean.  I want to get involved with the SPG Board to support its programs going forward, knowing that busy parents like us rely on our kiddos being in great hands before and afterschool.
